The Razes
THE LANGUEDOC and THE RAZES in particular has to be one of Southern France's best kept secrets.It covers quite a small area of the Aude but includes some of the loveliest scenery in the region. It is in the very heart of the land of the Cathars, with most of the castles within easy reach. They are a magnificent and moving sight, perched upon craggy hilltops and have stunning and far reaching views. This beautiful area with its vineyards,sunflower fields and hill top villages is all on your doorstep.
You are ideally placed for day trips to busy Mediterranean resorts, to often deserted beaches or even into Spain via Andorra and the Pyrenees. But close at hand you find some of the most spectacular scenery, fascinating wildlife and historic architecture that France has to offer. The tranquil Canal du Midi wends its way towards the Mediterranean and is perfect for walking,cycling or hiring a boat for the day.The local wines can be tasted at most of the Domaines and especially recommended is the Blanquette de Limoux - a sparkling wine made by a process older than that of champagne.
Nearby towns such as MIREPOIX, CARCASSONNE and LIMOUX are full of character, exuding a sense of timelessness, particularly at the busy weekly markets where the local patois is an intriguing mixture of French, Catalan and Occitan. |
